How to play

Everything about a Hoop Experts match: how rounds work, how each kind of question is scored, and what happens when it's level.

The match

Two players, twelve rounds. In every round you both get the same question at the same moment and answer before the shot clock runs out: 30 seconds, or 40 for Ordering, Name as many and Guess the match. You answer once per round. If you don't know, press Pass: you score nothing, and when both of you are done the round ends early.

Picking the topic

Before each round one of you picks, taking turns, so you each pick six times. The picker sees three topics, each a question type and a league, for example Which year? in the EuroLeague, How many? in the NBA or History in national teams. Your opponent sees the same three while you choose.

After the topic comes the difficulty:

The picker has 15 seconds. If time runs out, a random one of the three topics is played at Medium.

Scoring

A question is worth its difficulty: 1, 2 or 3 points. How you earn them depends on the kind of question.

QuestionYou answer withHow it scores
Player IDA playerRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
Coach IDA coachRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
Starting fiveThe missing playerRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
HistoryA player, coach or teamRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
Who said it?A player or coachRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
Stat lineA playerRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
Odd one outOne of four optionsRight answer: full points. Both players can score.
Ordering3 to 6 items in orderThe whole order must be right; one item out of place scores nothing.
Name as manyA list of namesEach right name counts +1 and each wrong one −1. The higher total, if above zero, takes the points; equal totals both score. A name entered twice counts once.
How many?A numberThe closer answer takes the points, and an exact answer earns 1 more. Equally close? The faster answer wins.
Which year?A yearThe same as How many?
Guess the matchWinner, final score, top scorerEach part is worth a third of the points. The right winner and the right top scorer score their third; the closer final score scores its third, and an exact score earns 1 more.

On the "closest wins" questions, an answer always beats no answer, however far off it is. On the others, speed doesn't matter: a right answer in the last second scores the same as one in the first.

The tiebreaker

Level after twelve rounds? You both get one hard How many? or Which year? question, and nobody picks. The closer answer wins the match; if you're equally close, the faster answer wins. If it's still level, or nobody answers, the match is a draw.

Ways to play

Rating

Everyone starts at 1000. Ranked wins raise your rating and losses lower it, by up to 32 points a game; beating a stronger player gains more than beating a weaker one. Games against the bot, quick matches and games with friends don't change it.

Leagues

Pick the leagues you follow when you start, and change them any time in Settings: NBA, EuroLeague and national teams. Questions only come from your leagues, and you only meet opponents who share at least one of them.

Losing connection

If your connection drops during a match, you have 20 seconds to come back and carry on where you were. After that the match counts as a forfeit. Leaving with the close button is a forfeit too.
