The short version. We collect what we need to run matches: your sign-in email, the profile you choose and your game history. We don't show ads, we don't sell data, we don't track you across other apps or websites, and the website uses no cookies. You can delete your account at any time in the app.
Who we are
Hoop Experts ("we", "us") makes the Hoop Experts app and runs this website. We are the controller of the personal data described here, under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Contact us about anything in this policy at support@hoopexperts.com.
What we collect and why
Your account
- Sign-in. When you sign in with Google or Apple, our sign-in service receives your email address and an account identifier from them. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we only get the relay address. We use this to create your account and keep it secure. We never see your Google or Apple password.
- Profile. Your username, display name, country (optional), the leagues you follow and your rating. You choose and can change all of these except the rating.
- Guest play. If you play as a guest, we create a profile with a random identifier and a generated name. Signing in later keeps that profile.
Your games
- Matches. Who you played, the mode and leagues, the questions in each round, your answers, how long you took, the points and the result. We need this to run matches, show your history and statistics, calculate ratings and leaderboards, and match you with fair opponents.
- Question statistics. How often each question is served and answered correctly, in total. These counts do not identify you; we use them to keep difficulty fair and to find wrong answers.
Friends
- Friend requests and friendships, and challenges you send or receive. Your friends can see when you are online.
Technical data
- Your IP address, app version, platform (iOS, Android or web) and connection times, plus error messages from our servers. We use these to run the service, keep it secure and fix problems. They are kept in server logs for up to 30 days.
On your device
- The app stores your sign-in tokens in your device's secure storage, plus your settings (sound, vibration and so on) and a list of player, coach and team names used for the answer search. This stays on your device.
When you contact us
- Whatever you include in an email to us, such as your address, username and message. We use it to answer you and keep it for up to two years.
What other players see
Other players can see your username, display name, country, rating and match record, on your profile, in matches and on leaderboards. Your email address is never shown to other players.
Legal bases
- Contract (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)): to provide the game you signed up for: your account, matches, friends, ratings and history.
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): to keep the service secure and working, prevent cheating and abuse, and improve questions using anonymous statistics.
- Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)): where the law requires us to keep or disclose data.
What we don't do
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No selling or renting of personal data.
- No tracking across other companies' apps or websites, and no third-party analytics in the app.
- No cookies on this website.
Who processes your data
- Amazon Web Services hosts our servers, database, sign-in service (Amazon Cognito) and this website. Our data is stored in the AWS Frankfurt region (Germany). Content such as this website and the names list is delivered through AWS's worldwide network.
- Google and Apple, if you sign in with them. They handle that sign-in under their own privacy policies.
- Apple and Google as app stores may give us anonymous, combined statistics such as download and crash counts.
- Expo (650 Industries, USA) may deliver app updates. When the app checks for one, Expo receives your IP address and basic app and device information.
- Our email provider, for messages you send us.
We only share personal data beyond this if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our players.
Transfers outside the EU
Our data is stored in the EU. Some of our providers, or their delivery networks, may process data outside the European Economic Area. When they do, they rely on the safeguards the GDPR requires, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep it
- Account and profile: until you delete your account.
- When you delete your account: we delete your sign-in and email address, your friends list and requests, and replace your username, display name and country with "Deleted player". Past matches stay in your opponents' history, no longer linked to you.
- Server logs: up to 30 days.
- Database backups: up to 14 days.
- Support emails: up to two years.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your personal data (access and portability);
- correct it (you can also edit your profile in the app);
- delete it (you can also delete your account in the app);
- restrict how we use it, or object to uses based on legitimate interests.
Email support@hoopexperts.com from the address you sign in with. We answer within one month. You can also complain to a data protection authority: in Greece, the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, or the authority where you live.
Children
Hoop Experts is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you are under the age at which you can consent to this yourself in your country (15 in Greece, between 13 and 16 elsewhere in the EU), please use Hoop Experts only with a parent's or guardian's permission. If you think a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
All traffic between the app, the website and our servers is encrypted (HTTPS and secure WebSockets). Our database is encrypted at rest, and access to production systems is limited to the people who run the service.
This website
The website is hosted by Amazon Web Services. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from other companies; its fonts and images are served from our own domain. AWS processes your IP address to deliver the pages.
Changes
We may update this policy as the app changes. We'll change the date at the top, and tell you in the app about changes that matter.
